GLOVERSVILLE, NY — December 12, 2002 — Taylor Made Systems has announced plans to eliminate lead-based materials in the fritted paint applied to its marine glass products.
The company has initiated a transition plan to shift from a lead-based to a bismuth-based material in the black fritted paint, which is applied around the edges of the glass in the manufacturing process.
"The change will increase the safety of our glass plant workers, and minimize the difficulty of disposal associated with lead, a potentially hazardous material," said Randy Parker, president of Taylor Made Systems. "This is part of a worldwide initiative to eliminate lead in products. Similar steps are being taken in the automotive industry."
"Our tests with the bismuth-based paint have shown that the change will not affect the strength or adhesive qualities of the glass when bonding with fiberglass surfaces, as long as proper procedures are followed in applying adhesives and sealing materials," Parker added.
