V-bottomed, vee-bottomed, veed sections Describes a boat whose bottom is V-shaped, with high deadrise (the bottom's angle to the water). In powerboats, a deep-V has about 26 degrees of deadrise all the way from bow to stern, while a modified-V has a sharp V at the bow, then gradually flattens toward the stern. Compare with flat-bottomed and round-bottomed. V-drive An arrangement in which the propeller shaft is installed at an acute angle to the engine rather than on a straight line (direct drive). valise See life raft. variable Shifty, unsteady in direction and force. variation The difference in degrees between true north and magnetic north.
