quadrant 1) A curved metal structure used in some steering systems to connect the steering wheel. 2) Dangerous quadrant, see dangerous semicircle. quarantine Restrictions on a newly arrived crew's activities in a port until they have received clearance (pratique) from local health officials. quarter, quartering A side of the boat near the stern. A quarter berth is a bed under a side deck and far aft. A quartering sea (quartering wind) is from abaft the beam but not directly astern. A buoy or other object off the boat that is lying between abeam and astern and on the starboard (port) side is described as being on the starboard (port) quarter. |
quick stop A tactic for effecting crew overboard rescue. Immediately after the victim falls over, the boat turns tight circles around him or her in order to maintain visibility and to facilitate making contact with a line or recovery device. |
